Dismissal from Israel, Outlawed from Ramallah
Well, they did it again. Another refugee to add to the ante. Of course, I have a 'home' to return to in the States. I can go back if I choose and continue to contribute to the fascist continuation of Occupation by paying those tax dollars--watch them manifest themselves into a panel of the Apartheid Wall, maybe morph into one of those atrocious watchtowers or into a rubber-coated steel bullet to be shot at the non-violent demonstrators in Bil'in. Sure, I have that dreadful home to return to.

But my home is in Palestine. My life is there. Those who favor and work for human rights, however, have no place in an Apartheid State, and the Israeli government does everything in their "God-given" power to eliminate this problem, through intimidation or by placing them on a plane and exporting them.

That scene of a field of apricot trees being ripped from the Earth by an Israeli bulldozer has been on replay ever since I lay in the Israeli prison bed. Israeli soldiers and police throwing men and women to the ground as they pray to Allah for this moment in time to cease. Sons are handcuffed. Activists are seen like rag dolls being tossed from here to there. Hundreds of years of livelihood dismantled by the Middle East's only democracy. And soon I find myself forced onto a plane by Israeli security because I bared witness, video-taped and photographed all that this democracy had to offer. I saw this democracy bare its teeth with its unpleasant smile, seeping through a stench of death, a 60 year old rotting lie of innocense.

And I am sent elsewhere. "Go back to your own country--aren't there enough problems with your own government," sneers the judge. God, if she only knew. Those problems with my government brought me here in the first place.

I wonder if when Oprah makes her solidarity visit for those "terrorized Israelis" she will see what's happening across the "border," listening to my or the thousands of other e-mails pleading that America's #1 talk show host experience the Palestinian plight, to see what terrorism means at 2am when an entourage of soldiers invades your village and practices a war games scenario, wreaking havoc on the inhabitants. Somehow I doubt it.

Israel wouldn't deport a high-profile American woman like Oprah because she reported on Israeli settlers attacking an 8-year old Palestinian boy in Hebron, would they?

You know, I wouldn't put anything past the Middle East's only democracy.

So, I am taking six weeks to redirect this anger, sadness, emptiness, and frustration, and hoping to manifest these emotions into something beautiful. A regime of ugliness has no defense against this kind of beauty.

But can this beauty battle billions of American tax dollars?

One can only hope.

Signing off until further notice...

Salamaat,
Jonas

Very sad news Joe... you will be sorely missed, but hopefully not for too long.
We look forward to your return.

What would you do if people didn't want to let you live in peace? The justness of our cause is the reason why we are still there and thriving! No other reason. When the Arabs finally accept jews living in the area, that's when we'll have a chance for peace. My kids have all moved there from the security of Canada, and they'll fight with their lives to preserve Israel.
If you believe we are the problem, you have fallen for the Big Lie.

We have all seen the maps and demographics for the region. They speak for themselves.

The big lie. That occupiers and invaders are the good guys. That torturers and land thieves are plucky settlers making the dessert bloom. That a thousand arabs aren't worth one Isrealie fingernail. Which big lie do you mean?

I mean the Big Lie that the Arabs belong in the area but that Jews don't have a significant history there. We have just as much right to the land as Arabs do(probably why we're still there and always will be!. As long as Arabs don't accept us being there, there will not be peace, and the Arabs will lose more than the Jews from this as they are the ones doing the killing! The Arabs will have to learn at some time, that they will only gain by peace with us, and living together, not by demonizing us.
We're not going away!

I'm sorry to hear this.. I had just subscribed to your journal.

Your country of origin, I'm assuming, is the U.S.... well, there is always something positive to be done even in the heart of the beast. I wish you well, and that you can return to Palestine to live like you want to, and have a right to.

First of all, sorry to hear about your situation Jonas but I know you'll make something good of it. While the feelings you express are understandable, I your post is a bit worrying. It is full of resentment and I might even say hatred, and it seems to only have intensified since I saw you last. Palestine has those two emotions in spades and I don't see how adding your own to the pile is helpful. We need someone who can rise above the animosity, see and speak well for both sides of the issue, get both sides to see how they are wrong and their actions counter-productive.

The Israelis living in fear of Palestinian bombs could write an equally justified post about the horrors inflicted on Israelis by Palestinians. I mean it's almost Jewish tradition to constantly remember and almost celebrate all the various ways they've been persecuted throughout time so if it's a contest of who's more persecuted, Jews have a lot of material to work with. How does this get us anywhere? Yes, I agree, it's completely screwed up and one of the most long-standing injustices in modern times. I think your work with documenting what's going on in Palestine is important and will help to get more journalists to do their job and report on it as well. We get very little of the Palestinian perspective voiced by Americans.

Yet, we also get even less, I would venture to say almost none, of Palestinians criticizing Palestine. Or American peace activists criticizing Palestine. Have they none of the blame to share? We get a lot from the Israeli perspective telling us how Palestinians are baby-killers and a lot from the Palestine perspective telling us how Israelis are baby-killers, but I don't hear anyone saying, hey let's try not killing babies anymore, which is the only solution in the end anyway.

When Palestinian military groups bomb Israel and kill innocent Israelis do you do a little victory dance or do you feel the same shame I feel when American soldiers kill innocent Iraqis? I'm not getting any outrage in your posts about that. I'm concerned that you may be trading the propaganda of one country for the propaganda of another.

Responding the other comment, under what concept Jonas have a "right" to be in Palestine? I mean I personally don't really believe in borders and nations and such so I think we all have to "right" to be wherever we want to be as long as we're not hurting anybody, but there's not a government in the world that agrees with me so...

The American people control the billions of tax dollars so I you want our tax dollars spent on something else you'll have to convince them to do it. Israel realizes this and has incredibly successful public relations, which is the reason they started getting the money in the first place. And don't buy into the BS about republicans screwing with the election system and rigging elections and crap. Our most recent election is proof that Republicans cannot dictate the outcome of our elections.

coming from a jew, your post is mis-informed.

just goes so show how much more people like jonas are needed to tell the other side of the story. because i don't think you are getting it very well.

the frustration and anger you sense from him come from witnessing first hand the abuse and violence of occupation that you cannot live for one day in palestine without seeing.

israelis who have never been to the west bank don't even know how good they have it.

Yikes, you make it seem as if they are victims! If they would only accept to live in peace with their neighbours and stop killing Jews, everything could be solved. They are the authors of their own misfortune.

Adios, don't forget yer keffiyeh! Good one IDF and Magav! Don't let the door hit you on the way out! But on a serious note, you have annoyed and harrased my friends and brothers in Zahal, perhaps put them in danger, and than counted on them not to harm you in return. The consequence of which is you are getting kicked the fuck out. See ya!
